Tax perspective on the US presidential elections

Webcast series

In anticipation of the US presidential elections, a series of webcasts will be held to share updates and insights regarding the potential (tax) impact.

The elections can potentially have a big impact for international businesses headquartered or operating in the United States. Deloitte therefore is organizing a series of webcasts to share updates and insights regarding these potential impacts.
The webcasts are a combined effort by Deloitte Netherlands and Deloitte US, featuring several experienced international tax and tax policy specialists.

Webcast details

1. Introduction of US elections and US tax plans Biden v Trump
Thursday October 15, 2020, 5pm-6pm CET / 11am-12pm EST

Hosts of this webcast:

  • Bob Stack (Managing Director International Tax and Tax Policy) and Storme Sixeas (Senior Manager International Tax and Tax Policy)
  • Imara Welfing (Partner International Tax – US Focus Team)
  • Arjan Fundter (Director International Tax – US Focus Team)
The first session will start with a general introduction including the formal and procedural aspects of the election process (e.g. the popular vote v electoral vote) and potential impact thereof to the outcome of the elections. Another topic that will be touched upon during this session, is the current division in the House of Representatives and Senate that can add another layer of complexity to the elections.

The second part of this session will evolve around a high-level discussion of the tax plans of Trump v Biden. In short, president Trump seems to ‘double down’ on the laws and strategies that were enacted since his electoral victory in 2016 whereas challenger Biden has announced several new measures such as a ‘Biden Offshoring Tax Penalty’ and a ‘Made in America Tax Credit’.

    2. Trade disputes and immigration policies including stance Biden v Trump
    Thursday October 22, 2020, 5pm-5.30pm CET / 11am-11.30am EST

    Hosts of this webcast:
    • Johan Hollebeek (Partner Global Trade Advisory)
    • Marjolein Krommenhoek (Manager Global Employer Services)
    • Arjan Fundter (Director International Tax – US Focus Team)
An important pillar of president Trump’s foreign affairs policy is a tough stance on US/China relationships, which has practically been given shape by among other the introduction of tariffs on a wide range of Chinese products and supplies (with similar rules being imposed by China). Current expectation is that Biden will also take a relatively stance on China, however it is also know that Biden is more outspoken in favor of trade agreements and international trading. In this context, the trade tariffs between the US and EU will also be discussed.

The second topic that will be discussed during this seminar, is the immigration policies envisaged by both candidates. Visas and other immigration related aspects have been changed under the Trump administration (in part as a result of the COVID-19 crisis), whilst it also is known that Biden has opposing views.

    3. (Preliminary) results and outlook
    Thursday November 5, 2020, 5pm-5.30pm CET / 11am-11.30am EST

    Hosts of this webcast:
    • Bob Stack (Managing Director International Tax and Tax Policy) or Jonathan Traub (Principal International Tax and Tax Policy)
    • Aart Nolten (Partner International Tax)
    • Arjan Fundter (Director International Tax – US Focus Team)
To the extent already known at that time, the last session will be about the outcome of the elections. Looking back at the plans discussed in the first session, our specialists will share some first insights into the (preliminary) results of the elections and discuss the expected outlook from a tax perspective.
